You don't get any extra tier points having status in the new year - so you might as well try and get Silver Status this year. ex-EU flight or BA holiday are probably the best way to go. Bronze isn't totally useless as you can choose seats 7 days ahead for free on BA - which is useful if you want to ensure Window or Aisle seats on busy flights. It's easier to try and achieve status with some kind of status generally - even Bronze....
