Thanks all for the info. In the end we were delayed only an hour or so so not too bad. Being on that BA123 must have been a bit of an experience for the passengers, I am guessing with such an expedited return, and the huge workload that must have caused, the flight deck wouldn’t have had any time to communicate what was going on.
