They have been doing that. I find it very annoying, it's none of their business. Last year the guy was very intrusive saying "you are here for your Amex, swipe your Amex" in a weird way (arrogant) when asking for payment of the gift card.
it has been getting worse every year, they probably talk about it a lot.
At that store the cashiers like to put you down if you buy a $50 gift card. It feels like a harassment.
