Being the first Quebecker on this discussion, here's my 2 cents:
When I was a kid (some 30 + years ago) it was PQ. I have no clue why PQ. Was Ontario called PO (Province of Ontario?) and Alberta PA?
However, about some 15 years ago the PQ abbreviation was replaced by QC, which I believe is more accurate. I didn't pay attention to the exact moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if the PQ (Parti Québécois) was in power and initiated that change for the obvious reasons yulgirl mentioned.
