I found The Langham odd. It isn't exactly a luxury hotel. Service was poor throughout. The front-door staff kept to themselves and never acknowledged guests upon entering or exiting the property. I don't mind this, but I know some (my parents for one) who would.
I used my on-property credit for dinner for two on two consecutive nights at Aria, and I wish I had just gotten drinks or room service. The Aria wait staff didn't clear tables, so most tables had used plates, glasses and linens left behind from previous guests. Some tables had too many or too few chairs, as previous guests commandeered them and no one bothered to put them back afterward. On both nights, I was seated and not presented a glass of water or the menu. I always had to ask for both and then wait again to have my order taken. After the food was delivered to the table, I didn't see the staff again, which might explain why so many other tables had plates left behind. No water or drink refills, and no one to flag to get the check. I checked out on both nights by walking to the bar and telling the bar staff what I had ordered to bill to my room. In contrast, the wait staff at the Melba breakfast buffet were top notch—super attentive, remembered coffee orders on the second day, cleared plates almost immediately, and the like.
The rooms could also use a remodel or refresh, as the furnishings and bathroom fixtures are dated and show wear. The bathroom lighting is also very poor. It's not well lit, so you're in the dark while in the shower.
But the location is great (Southbank, about a five-minute walk to Flinders Street Station on a pedestrian bridge) and the price on a three-night stay is a steal because of the complimentary third night!
