I suppose this is more of the opposite of this thread. Back in 04 I was on a sailboat in the Florida Keys when Hurricane Katrina was a category 2 or 3. We were docked that night so it wasn't a huge deal. However we didn't realize it turned towards MSY and grew to a category 4/5 until we had boarded our JetBlue flight home.

I was away at the time, and yes, Katrina was a ho-hum hurricane hitting FL, and supposed to curl into Northern FL. I checked the news at the New Orleans newspaper website nola.com the next day, and by then it was at 170 MPH with the 3-day forecast line showing a direct hit. I was living in a SE suburb, and my house was 1 mile away from the path of the western side of the eye; yes, I had gotten 6" of water ... in my upstairs.
