This doesn't exactly count, but it was travel-related. I had just arrived in Kiev and got an apartment, but it took a few days before the internet got hooked up. And back then, WI-FI was not quite as ubiquitous. It was early May, 2011, and this guy had passed away while I was in a news blackout:

And Honorable Mention, there was a non-travel related piece of news I had missed when I went to the hospital for my regular cancer surveillance tests on September 11, 2001, and hadn't heard anything until I had gotten back to my car in the late afternoon.

And oh, here's another travel-related thing, when I was changing apartments in St. Petersburg, Russia on Feb 24, 2022, and didn't hear of the big news about Russia doing a "special operation" until I was all set up. I did not stay the whole month. The supermarkets were eerily empty, and there were huge lines at ATMs.
