Should be no worries and United can change this for you (likely have to call based on past experience). During the old Continental / United switch, and then again about 8 years ago, it defaulted my middle name to First initial and now am First name First Initial of middle name (vs full). United told me was best way to go, and have stuck with it since. It conforms with how Passports often end up and while my Driver's License is different, never an issue.

TLDR; near-term, no issues in my experience, and call United and they can fix.
