Sounds really ridiculous to me that even if u pay cash for a business class seat, u have to pay extra to select a seat.
Totally normal in year 2023. Some other airlines like Finnair, Emirates, Air France, British Airways are a couple of other airlines who also charges for seat selection in advance on discounted business class tickets.
People with status could still choose their seats in advance, and this ensures that loyal flyers and last minute business travelers ( usually on high fares ) get their preferred seats over a one-time flyer purchasing his ticket more than 6 months in advance.
Also, seat selection at online check-in is complimentary for everyone so someone could who purchases those saver fares could choose their seat at that time free of charge.
