1st, you wouldn't want to call the airline to have your ticket changed, because then they see that there is something 'wrong' with it
But just for the fun of it to answer your question in general.
Most fare rules say:
IF no segment has been flown yet, then use current fares --> meaning you pay the price a new ticket would cost now minus what you already paid
IF outbound segments have been flown, then use historical fares --> meaning the system will calculate the price based on the actual etix issue date
Thats why for error fares you pay the 'non error fare' price if you change your booking before taking any flights, but if you change the return after flying the outbound flights, you only pay the difference based on the original error fare
