Since this should generate an automated email incident number which should keep the insurance company happy. Take plenty of screen shots. It's counter intuitive but it is best putting luggage into the overhead on the opposite side of the aisle.
Good advice re putting luggage in the overhead locker on the other side of the aisle. I always do that as it's easier to remove and you can keep an eye on it. It sometimes raises an eyebrow or two, but who cares.
