I've wondered the exact same thing... I have a Chase Sapphire Reserve that essentially has a $250 fee ($550 minus the easy to use $300 travel credit). I just don't see how it makes sense for them. I probably get $500 a year alone just at Capers at PDX. Then, on top of that, I use my PP to get into 8 or 10 lounges each year.
Bringing it back to AS - that price is far too rich for my blood. I might be more inclined if I didn't have such a good PP option at my home airport of PDX. I think AS is trying to thin the herd and I'm sure it will work to some extent. That being said, the core group of travelers with good AS lounges at their frequent airports (SEA really) will always find the value.
this is us as well. capers on CSR is our best value. however I get just enough value out of frequent layovers in SEA and the N lounge that the AC/AL access through my Citi MC Elite will probably stay in rotation another year.
