The most likely outcome is when the hotel (via Loyalty) does go to take the points and they are not there, you will retroactively be charged a paid rate for that reservation and it will go into Marriott's version of collections - your Bonvoy account will be suspended until you've settled your bill.

This is not the only outcome, but the most likely.
