I bought points myself in the last couple of year to use them at hotels, where the points rate was less than buying points (note if you buy 26k points the price lowers to 10 USD per 1k points). I compare the points rate with the flexible rate though.

And sometimes you get a discount as elite meber / credit card holder, so this should be taken into account as well.
