The fees for North America to Europe are incredibly high and not worth using Miles and More to book. I could be wrong, but my experience searching for J awards, has been that there is little to no difference in fees if you book 2 one-ways or a return.
I've looked at some promo awards lately and return awards in Europe to US (and back to Europe) direction had significantly lower, like up to 80% IIRC lower, fees and taxes.
I, like Dave, think that this is because the US is a source of award mile rich customers who don't otherwise create revenue for Lufthansa.
