How full was the flight? I can understand relaxing the limit a bit if there will be space for everyone.
If you were replying to my post the flight was full, full, full...maybe 2 empty seats and it was ex-YEG so lots of people with big coats, etc, in addition to the huge rollers that would have NEVER fit in the sizer.

I actually felt bad for the FA's that were doing their best to move things around and having to lift some pretty heavy bags over their heads from side to side trying to make room for all of the carry-on...total non-sense IMHO.
