For a new revenue ticket, the system uses married inventory. It would have booked your combination into I class due to lack of Z, but using DL898 you could both be in Z.
However, I believe from what you report that RUC clearance is still per-segment and ignores married inventory. In that case, all that matters is that DL501 had Z space alone (so you cleared) and DL428 did not (it was only Z1).
The RM curve computer sneezed last night, and 428 is now J9 D5 I5 Z0 alone, and apparently an analyst realized that there was still a connecting flight that DL was selling cheaply.
