A couple years back, after I had swiped, a cashier asked something like - You're not using the chip? I said it was my credit union debit card, and it was glitchy when you used the chip, and was told to just slide it until they figure out if they can fix it, or they'll have to issue new cards. That seemed to satisfy her.
