It's a good deal, that does come around a few times a year.
With points costing $5 per 1000, just do some "test bookings" and compare via the cash rate. Remember, go all the way through to the checkout page in the cash bookings, because with points you avoid all taxes and fees so you must include those, not just the "room rate".
Most of the time I come out ahead using points. With a card that gives you every fourth night free, and a points rebate, it's a no brainer and you almost always come out significantly ahead using paid points.
