No. UA does not charge for carry-on bags. They simply do not allow carry-on bags to BE passengers who don't have an exception (qualifying credit card, status, etc.). If you are in BG6, you will not be allowed to board with anything larger than a personal item.

I suppose if you really wanted to try, you could pay the $50, gate-check it, and then rip the tag off during boarding and hope to sneak it on. That said, on an E75, unless it's fairly empty, passengers in BG6 would have been gate-checking their luggage anyway, because the bins would be full by the time they got on the plane.
