Yup, this is very expensive lesson learned for sure.
I actually researched this a bit before I booked. I saw that there was a MCT (minimum connection time) at the Stockholm airport of 2 hours, so I thought my connection would be okay. It almost was! I got to the ticket counter just FOUR minutes after they closed the flight.
The MCT (minimum connection time) *only* applies when both flights are on the same ticket/PNR. Normally bags are interlined and both boarding passes issued. Would be unusual not to have that..
With separate flight you are not
connecting. Just 1 flight ending and and another starting at the same airport. Hence MCT mean nothing.
For short~cheap flight to a long~expensive flights (in 1 ticket) I try to select flight with more than the airlines MCT.
At times where I do book separate flights have
MCT plus 2 hrs or even overnight .
