This raises an interesting question: Would it actually save fuel to fly a jet with only one engine than with two at the same cruising speed/altitude? This would require that the one engine be providing twice the thrust at cruise, so it would be burning more fuel than if both engines were on. But would it be more, or less, than twice the amount of fuel each engine burns when both are on?
