I would cancel, either via the app or by phone, after flying the desired segments and before the doubt you don't want leaves.
Thanks for your thoughts. I think I can cancel via the Alaska app or website after I've flown the QR segments. I may try to do that.

Completely OT: you do realise your own car insurance or credit card won't cover the Turo rental (almost certainly, not sure if there are carriers that cover those), not to mention coverage in Canada for which you'd normally need some (free) Canada insurance form from your insurance company, and do they even allow driving into Canada?
Thanks for your thoughts. I don't believe that I'll be able to not check in for the SEA-PDX flight when we start our journey at JNB, but I can try. I don't think I'll call Alaska or stop by a counter at SEA to cancel; I may do it online or via the app.

Regarding Turo, I'm quite familiar with insurance issues when using Turo as I'm a Turo Powerhost on Kauai and I've used Turo a couple of times as a guest. I'm not aware of any credit card that covers Turo trips, although I've heard rumors about a USAA card. But on the other hand, many guests' personal car insurance polices do indeed cover them for Turo trips. A fellow Turo host here on Kauai who is also an insurance agent says that "most" insurance policies now cover Turo. I'm not sure if that's actually true or not, but the number of policies covering Turo trips is apparently increasing all the time. Although there are certainly cut rate policies that don't cover Turo. In this case, how many policies cover Turo isn't relevant; all that matters is if my policy covers me for Turo. I had previously confirmed that I am covered by my State Farm policy when booking cars on Turo. However, I wasn't sure about Canada and had planned to call my agent to check. Your message reminded me that I needed to do that, so I called them today and indeed I'm covered in the US and Canada when booking vehicles on Turo.

Also, Turo allows cars to be taken freely between the United States and Canada, and hosts cannot independently restrict that.
