The airline may be responsible for the OP being denied entry, but that doesn't mean the airline should be responsible for the OP. It's a story between the airline and the Indian government.

I'm not sure, but what they meant was free, maybe they meant to put you on the plane without a penalty or extra penalty for changing the date
