Airline check in staff are not border agents. Many reasons they could check your paperwork as ok and let you board. One example, the border agents might not believe the purpose of your trip and decide to deny entry. I have had issues entering the US in the past when i used to visit more or less every 3 months and the wanted to check more that I was not living there and doing 'visa runs'.
