How about canceling the booking which would generate a credit and then rebooking. The dilemma would be that you’d have such credit attached to each of the travelers so it’d depend on how frequently you travel.
You could try the rebooking by calling Delta and asking for the discount to be applied from the onset. That would still leave the residual credit with each passenger but still need to be used within a year.
