Perhaps the wrong terminology was used, but there's a difference between a "confirmation" email, and a "Your recent AAdvantage Award Redemption" email. If the OP received an email headed "Your Trip Confirmation," then the OP got a "confirmation" email, which should have the PNR and ticket number. If that email went to somebody else, then you're right. But the OP should still be able to find the ticket number on the transaction detail for the credit card used to pay the award's associated fees.
I'm not sure that "confirmation email" has a technical, official definition. I assumed that he meant the recent award redemption email, which is the email that he got to confirm that the flight was booked. I wouldn't call it a "confirmation email" either, to avoid confusion, but I'm not sure that calling it that is wrong.
