Honestly, I'm beginning to think credit card surcharges are perhaps one of the most dangerous threats to the points and miles game out there and I'm not really sure its on the mainstream public's radar (and probably just never would be, we are a niche group for sure).
We recently returned from 5 nights in New Orleans and I was gobsmacked by the number of random restaurants that we patronized that added a credit card surcharge, it was almost inescapable.
Historically, I've been occasionally willing to pay a surcharge when, for example, paying property or income taxes or something like that in order to hit a SUB that was worth substantially more than the fee I was paying.
However, as this practice continues to pick up steam (for example, wireless carries requiring debit/ACH for "autopay discounts" etc.) at some point if there was a 3% "overlay" on all of my spend, I'd probably really have to start thinking twice...
