For what it's worth, I fly annually from LHR to MEL to visit family. I fly on SQ - LHR -> SIN -> MEL, usually in premium economy (decent price v performance ratio for me)
Do you ever consider using Scoot on the last leg (first leg on the return)? I often see prices sky-rocket as soon as I add the Australia element to my fare search, so quite often (and since I ALWAYS do a stopover in SIN anyway) I just use Scoot. To be fair their Scoot Biz class (now called Scoot Plus) is a quite decent product (well, just seat) similar to premium economy.
