I certainly think there are too many BNE seats (which makes them the easiest to score lower priced awards or upgrades). A lot of Americans probably don’t know much about Brisbane nor have an interest in visiting it. Sydney/Melbourne always come to mind first. Same for CHC, although UA is currently holding the line on high prices for that route. They may have a reality check after that service commences.
I think the flights will start to fill up come Dec/Jan/Feb - including OZ-USA for the summer break Aussies.
re: BNE, I've always found it attractive as I like the airport and then you can just drive to the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast - or take a domestic flight north. I'm actually connecting BNE-Wagga Wagga (of all places) in Dec which avoids SYD. But your point is valid - not many Americans will factor this in and will likely just choose SYD/MEL.
