Perhaps all that infrastructure that was put in for the soccerball does have some legacy use (Expo, winter sports tournaments etc) and some of the hotels just don't want/need to host ultra cheap one nighters who may also tend to eat when they get back to the airport. Things may change again once the winter is over.
But c.GBP 22 for the standard 4* and GBP 38 for the premium 5* hotels is still excellent value, and arguably a much better room than the short time offer in AS.
I think you've fallen into the
per person trap.
Rooms at the lowest-tier premium hotels start at GBP 76 a night. That's for one night stays: the rate goes up to GBP 90 per night for the maximum four-night stay. The higher tier places in the premium, 5-star, category include breakfast in their rates, which start at GBP112 a night for one night stays, going up to GBP 125 a night for four nights.
Those latter are seriously punchy rates for the likes of the Crowne Plaza by the HQ of the security police. Some hotels in the premium category are suffering from star inflation.
