For what it is worth, AA responded to my question as to why I was targeted for the 30K promo and my wife was not (we have identical travel - although I have dbl the lifetime miles).

See the other thread for that e-mail, but the gist is that they choose certain groups to send promos, and then compare the subsequent travel with others that did not receive the promo, to see whether the promo resulted in more revenue for AA. If they gave the targeted promo to everyone, logic goes, they have no control group with which to compare and thereby judge success. (Presumably, if everyone targeted brought in enough increased revenue to offset the cost, the promo could/should be expanded beyond just the target group - but that's just my own thought.)

In our particular case, however, we will not be changing our travel plans for the sake of my getting a bonus - although if we had both been targeted I would have definitely looked into extra full-fare run(s) for the two of us.

FWIW, I have not received many targeted promos. I think it is just luck of the draw.
