Flights operated by United earn points but not tier credits under a long standing partnership

Once Aer Lingus joins the AA/BA/IB joint venture fully these flights should earn, however thats the future not present
Unfortunately Aer Lingus didn't have this combination of flights they offered no alternatives with other airline partners neither for the flight dates and times I needed. I understand that I would not get any tier credits but I would have thought I would have at least earned Avios since I flew with Aer Lingus or AA points as I booked flights with them. Seems unusual that you can spend £5k on flights and not have anyway to earn any points, it's almost like airlines shouldn't sell for other airlines if you can't earn points especially when AA allowed me to input an one of a number of loyalty card numbers when they should have stated that the booking would earn no points with either AA or Avios.
