In most cases you can book into a lower cabin regardless of whether the "correct" cabin is offered. It just books into the highest RBD of the lower cabin. The website might not offer it, but it can be done.

My colleague is flying HKT-SIN in Y connecting to MUC in J on a through Z fare.


Not that any of this affects the OP. Paid tickets shouldn't be a benchmark for what's possible with awards.
I called back and they are stating because it's a *A award it has to be broken apart. If it were SQ only they could do it, saying it's a system limitation.
