Erfurt also enjoys fatastic public transport on trains and trams, so take a hotel near the main station for convenience and travel from there.
We booked the Hotel Domizil, across the street from the Christmas market at the Domplatz, and adjacent to the old town for a quick look around. Easy 5 minute tram ride from train station. Looking forward to it. Hopefully DB will cooperate.
