The stars program is for travel agents/advisors so assume you are one of those to be able to take advantage of that. Theres no downside to using stars as you will also get your plat elite benefits, but also the perks from stars like the $100 credit, breakfast for 2 etc. I assume you know that stars is just limited to the high end luxury brands as well.
