I don't think it makes much sense on an operational stand-point, since LGW maintenance and pilots are Boeing trained, and the A35K has too much capacity vs. the 772. The best bet here is that the aging 788 will be moved to LGW at some point. BA is definitely going to have some issues with the 777X delays (if it ever gets approved...). They'll have to order more A35Ks and 781s to replace the 77W in LHR.
The issue with sending the 788 to Gatwick is that the planes have a lower capacity than the current 772.
After having another think, the best thing would be to order new planes for Gatwick, either the A350-900 or 787-9.
There still hasn’t been any more news about BA’s order for 772 replacements, which was mentioned a few weeks ago. Hopefully we it gets announced this month.
