Following up: We had a stroke of luck; got up in the morning to find a message from QANTAS that our flight had been cancelled. We were automatically rebooked on one slightly later but when we got to the airport I asked at the service desk (T1) and she happily put us on the one we wanted, even later. So, no further anecdata regarding voluntary same-day changes -- but a happy result for us.
