Is there aother flight from Washington to Grand Rapids that is earlier than the one that you are booked on and meets the connection time requirements?

If not, then there isn't really much you can do. If there is, then ask AA to rebook you onto the earlier service

Alternatively, if another airline would work out better, just purchase a separate ticket for the domestic sector on that airline
