This is what happens l usually happens (including with other airlines)

On AA the on-hold reservation actually shows up under your trips until you cancel or it auto-cancels.

Any time you go as far as entering passenger details, it has to create a PNR and put a reservation on hold for you. Where it shows up (or if it shows up at all) is just a UI question. But the PNR is there either way.
