While true, I suspect many may not be aware that the risks of using a debit card to purchase items are much different than using a credit card for the same item (at least in the US). When using a debit card, your bank account is debited immediately to support the payment to the vendor. When using a credit card, the credit card company makes the payment on your behalf and then collects payment from the cardholder. If airline goes bankrupt and ceases operations, there are consumer protection regulations that can avoid having to make payment for airline tickets not able to be honored. For the same ticket purchased with a debit card, the traveler is basically an unsecured creditor and has to wait behind other creditors with higher standing to be made whole and hope with no guarantee that there will be funds left to make the purchaser whole.
For that reason, I always advise against using a debit card as a credit card to make purchases of any item of considerable value and/or not consumed immediately.
