When I go book flights on aa website, I enter my AAdvantage number and then last name and password. So you are saying that the few times I flown with American, I was in group 6 because of this? I just checked my aa account on my phone and it shows me being an AAdvantage member.
If you already have an AAdvantage number (no credit card required) and you are logged into your AAdvantage account when you book a flight on AA, then yes, your AAdvantage number will be in your reservation record, and you will be assigned Boarding Group 6 -- even on a Basic Economy ticket. You would be in the same Boarding Group 6 even if you bought a more expensive Main Cabin fare, as long as your AAdvantage number were in the reservation record, so it does not sound like there would be any benefit to you to pay for a Main Cabin ticket, as long as you are OK with a non-changeable Basic Economy ticket.

If you still have access to an old AA boarding pass -- either paper or digital -- you should be able to confirm this yourself.
