Unless you are on a single award from ORD to SGN, the only way AA would allow you to through-check bags and protect you in the event of IROPS is if both tickets (award + award or cash+award) were in the same PNR.
Single AAward ticket, all flyers are on the same PNR - ORD-SFO-HND-SGN.
