Because AAward tickets for ORD-SGN did not show up on the AAwards site, we were slow to learn the site was actually robust, there just wasn't any availability.

So we initially called AA for an ORD-Tokyo AAward, and sought to buy JAL, NRT-SGN at $380 which is a super great deal to get JAL, Tokyo - SGN .

The process had pitfalls.

The AAgent adamantly would not book the 90 minute connection saying it was outside the time limit.

Then, in another situation, the AAgent changed a same day connection to an outside 24 hours connection AFTER we hung up, and AFTER we told them, "Do not change the ticket".

That was a first time weird.

That AAgent didn't get the changed ticket cleared with JAL so the ticket could not be issued.

Then, trying to figure out what happened, it got worse. Basically, a full blown twilight zone theater.

What a few of the AAgents are able to get away with over the phone is amazing.

Luckily, AA Twitter quickly came to the rescue and sorted out everything.

And after all that... it finally got into my thick head to use the AAward platform and Voilą, a through ticket, ORD-SFO-HND-SGN became available at 37,500 AAmiles.

Imagine our surprise when we saw many AAward tickets out of SFO with the same 90 minutes connection.

The AAward to SGN is a great deal when you consider 35K on JAL to Tokyo, and only 37,500K, seven hours further to SGN.

Recently, since we are no longer EXP, we've been arriving 2 hours before.

But, setting aside we're living in the past, when you look at what used to be available at NRT JAL F, you can see why spending 4 hours at the airport before a flight might make sense.
