Top show up 4 hours before a US domestic flight is insane/waste of time IMO...

Rest assured that AA will sort it out at SFO in the unlikely event that you miss the JL flight. Don't overthink this. Thousands of pax do the same transfer every day at SFO (and other US hubs).
