Having said that, when I was doing the "EXP Light Mileage Runs" in 2012, we would disembark one gate and run into a standby ticketed plane already fully boarded. That was 10 RT $250 flights ORD-LAX = 100,000 AAmiles with bonuses.
We're looking at SFO's Fog weather delays and can't image this will work out well. But AA will not give us an ORD-SFO-TOKYO-SGN AAward ticket that leaves ORD-SFO a day earlier. Even inside the 24 hours.
I'm looking at AA 2418 on aa.com; its on time rate is 84%. If you've managed to be EXP and never had a less than 90 minute domestic-international connection, I'm surprised. I at least never book a connection as long as 90 minutes when I can avoid it (and I've never been close to top-tier elite status). Misconnects happen, but not all that often.
