Appreciate the heads-up. We're people that arrive at the airport 4 hours before ORD international flights, so we are trying to anticipate a world with a 90 minute connection.
Having said that, when I was doing the "EXP Light Mileage Runs" in 2012, we would disembark one gate and run into a standby ticketed plane already fully boarded. That was 10 RT $250 flights ORD-LAX = 100,000 AAmiles with bonuses.
We're looking at SFO's Fog weather delays and can't image this will work out well. But AA will not give us an ORD-SFO-TOKYO-SGN AAward ticket that leaves ORD-SFO a day earlier. Even inside the 24 hours.
Thanks.
