Was this a refund? But a refund on a cancellation should be back to the original mode of payment, not a FFC.

Or compensation for the inconvenience? Common for higher elites to get more. But both of these are well above the norm.

Was it an FFC or ETC? Generally an ETC is for compensation. FFC are for voluntary cancellations.

If this is not a EC261 offer and does not sound like it is, you can also claim EC261 compensation while accepting the inconvenience compensation.

EC261 comp requires offer of cash but allows an alternative offer of an ETC (typically $1,000 for a cancellation)

All in all, there are things that do not make sense.
