I have a BA award flight, one way ATL-ORD on Friday. Metal is AA. I just had a stroke and can't take this trip. Do I ask for a cancellation via BA or AA? The BA app couldn't do anything. Will I get my Avios back? There aren't many, but I'd prefer to have them returned.

Sorry to hear about your medical problem.
You need to cancel through BA. If it’s not possible online you will either need to call or use the chat function.
You have time. As long as you cancel more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time you will receive back all the Avios and charges minus a small admin fee. If you explain the reason for the cancellation it’s possible they may waive the admin fee too.
