Today right at 5pm PST (9am Japan time tomorrow), I snagged a return seat from HND-DFW for T-14. Not west coast (I think APEC is messing it up for SFO...but I did check SEA/LAX). I'll have to book my own cash ticket from DFW to SFO to get home but I'm sitting on AA credit. Not ideal to hop on another domestic flight (on a seperate itin) but I'll take it. Did have to pay the difference in miles and an extra 45 cents in taxes, but F in JAL is one of my favorite flying experiences, so it was worth it for me.
When I was doing my search I saw that 5 seats were left avail (well 4 now, since I took 1).
So TLDR: the T-14 trick still works from some routes.
I am in the same situation: originally have a F booked on 11/17, but I want to change it to a day later. JL has been consistently release more F at T-14 for HND-DFW in the last couple months. Those seats usually get snagged within a few hours. I was lucky to have just enough internet to book my F seat for 11/18 during taxi & waiting for take off at SFO yesterday at 5pm.
For SFO/LAX, JL may release more F/J when it gets closer to departure. I usually see more availability at ~T-3
